The Role

The Sustainability and Energy Manager (SEM) is responsible for leading strategic and day-to-day operational sustainability energy management projects for the University, including those that drive the implementation of the University’s:

  • Sustainability Strategy: to 2030 and Beyond

  • ISO 14001 certified Environmental Management System (EMS).

Sustainability aspects of the:

  • Estates Strategy

  • University Strategy


Playing a critical role in the delivery of University’s sustainability and energy management commitments and aspirations, the SEM will be responsible for:

  • Driving implementation of sustainability and energy policies, plans and projects which will provide tangible measurable sustainable outcomes for the University.

  • Update the EMS to conform to the ISO 14001:2026 by the 2029 external audit.

  • Managing environmental reporting and the upgrade and maintenance of the ISO 14001:2015 certified EMS.

  • Managing the university’s considerable utilities consumption across the estate’s portfolio and supporting a broad range of energy efficiency and net-zero energy projects.


Providing streamlined and effective:

  • utilities/supplier contract management
  • utilities invoice validation and payment
  • energy data and metering management
  • and support delivery of energy efficiency projects.
  • Embedding sustainable asset management into the infrastructure lifecycle process.
  • Managing the implementation and ongoing running of procured Climate Action and Environmental Impact tools (including roll-out to other stakeholder groups to be accountable at the team).
  • Meeting the University’s commitment to create lasting positive impact and ensuring that our operations, education, and research actively contribute to regenerating natural systems and fostering societal wellbeing.


Working closely with key internal and external stakeholders, the role will develop and lead the implementation of sustainable policies, management systems, and projects across the University to:

  • Empower our diverse community of students, staff and partners to drive sustainability innovation and create lasting positive impact on London and beyond

  • Transform our operations to minimise environmental impact, maximise resource efficiency, and set new standards for responsible university management

  • Achieve biodiversity net gain across the University’s entire portfolio and establish London as a leader in urban biodiversity enhancement

  • Achieve net-zero carbon emissions, while building resilience to climate-related risk across the estate


The post holder will act as a champion for sustainable practice across the university, managing projects to drive and embed cultural and behavioural change throughout the organisation.
