The Role

Head of IHR Library

The IHR’s Library & Digital resources are at the heart of its national mission to support the work of historians.  Through its unique physical and digital collections, the IHR aims to begin its second century by continuing to push the boundaries of what historical research might look like in the future, placing the physical and the digital in productive dialogue, and inspiring projects and initiatives that change minds and shape fields.

The Institute of Historical Research is therefore seeking a dynamic library professional who will be crucial to the development of the IHR’s strategy.  The post-holder should have experience managing library and digital resources, have experience in strategic and organisational development and have the ability to enrich the IHR’s position at the centre of the worldwide History community.

The postholder will look closely at current IHR library use, at engagement with IHR resources, at collection management and development policy and at the use of space. They will ensure that Library & Digital supports the IHR’s new programmes and initiatives.   They will also see that IHR meets the needs of historians in a post-covid landscape and develop a strategy that will provide long-term support for innovative historical scholarship.

At its core, the IHR is dedicated to supporting and training the next generation of historians, and to producing and facilitating ambitious, innovative historical research.  The Head of IHR Library will be responsible for leading the library and digital team in delivering this key strategic objective.
