Founded in 1947 the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies supports and leads legal research, in its broadest sense, nationally and internationally. An Institute of the University of London’s School of Advanced Study, it houses specialist research centres and innovative partnerships and is home to an active community of researchers, fellows and postgraduate students, promoting new research agendas in specialist and interdisciplinary areas of law. The Institute maintains one of the world’s great legal research libraries, provides freely available online legal information services, legal research training, is a meeting place for organisations and legal scholars from around the world, and offers a busy programme of conferences, public lectures and seminars.
The Director will provide academic, administrative and strategic leadership to this important centre for legal research and scholarly activity. With a commitment to the national and international role of the Institute, the Director will work across a complex collegiate and partner network in directing its full range of activity encompassing research, learning, enterprise and income diversification. S/he will participate fully in the work of the School of Advanced Study.
This is a high-profile role within the academic legal community and requires a legal scholar of international distinction with Professorial status or eligibility to be awarded Professorial status upon appointment. Candidates will bring experience of successfully leading and managing diverse teams in a complex, knowledge-led environment with evidence of financial acumen and an ability to manage in a changing environment. Politically astute and a proactive advocate for the Institute’s national role, candidates will have a good knowledge of the UK higher education and research funding systems.
