The Role
The School of Advanced Study, University of London, is a partner in a major research project, led by the Science Museum Group: ‘The Congruence Engine: Digital Tools for New Collections-Based Industrial Histories’. The project aims to show how Artificial Intelligence and other computational tools can be used to link museum collections for the purpose of doing new historical work and to enhance access. This is one of five exciting three-year projects funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council under the ‘Towards a National Collection’ scheme. It will bring together specialist digital programmers with historians, curators and community groups to conduct individual and group research projects on industrial history and its contemporary resonances.
Postdoctoral Research Associate in Digital Humanities
A Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) in Digital Humanities is required to work as part of the Congruence Engine project team, with particular responsibility for the Digital Humanities Work Package. The PDRA will work with the wider team to identify and mitigate biases in the data and technologies used in the project; to help develop ethical research practices and frameworks for working with digital collections data; and to assist with the development of interactive data visualisations for museum display. An effective team worker is required, with experience of undertaking Digital Humanities research and working with cultural heritage collections. An interest in ethical digital scholarship and an understanding of the uses and potential of linked open data for historical research are essential. An interest in industrial heritage and history is desirable but not essential.
The post is full-time and will start on 1 February 2022.
