The Institute of Advanced Legal Studies

The Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (IALS) is a postgraduate research institute with a core of over 130 researchers, research students and legal information professionals, but which draws its primary membership from academic researchers and postgraduate research students from other institutions throughout the UK, and which also provides services to researchers in the wider legal community.

Graduate Trainee Library Assistants

The two posts are one-year fixed term training posts designed for graduates carrying out a year of work experience and training prior to obtaining a professional qualification. Each trainee is initially based in one of the library’s three departments. After each period of four months, trainees change roles so as to experience working throughout the library in the course of their contract. This timetable enables them to develop an overall understanding of the links between the different teams and how the library fits together as a whole. The trainees are entirely integrated into the smooth running of the Library, undertaking essential back-office duties as well as working on our busy Issue & Enquiry Desk. An extensive staff development programme is detailed elsewhere and monitoring and feedback from that programme takes place.

Experience and Personal Qualities

Essential:
•    Some experience of customer service in any context would be an advantage.
•    Good interpersonal skills: be able to work independently and as part of a team.
•    Be prepared to work flexibly in a rapidly changing environment.
•    Should be able to demonstrate an attention to detail.
•    Commitment to a career in librarianship.

Desirable:
•    Specific experience of working in a library is not required, as this is a training post.

Technical Knowledge and Skills

Essential:
•    A competent level of IT skills is required including knowledge of Word & Excel

Desirable:
•    Some knowledge of a major western European language (other than English) is desirable.

Education and Professional Qualifications

Essential:
•    Education to graduate level, or equivalent by experience or ability.
