Job Description

The University of London

The University of London is a leading UK provider of distance and digital education internationally, offering programmes to 45,000 students in 190 countries around the world. Although proudly rooted in London, our community and impact are global.

We are a national leader in the humanities, and we promote their value to society and the economy through knowledge creation and exchange.

We are also a federation of 17 world class higher education institutions, with collaboration at the heart of our ethos. The University of London federation is a collective community of more than 240,000 learners and 50,000 staff, delivering world-leading research across all disciplines.

Our passion for increasing access to education and mobilising the collective power and expertise of the federation is central to our ability to transform lives around the world and address the global challenges of the future.

The Institute of Classical Studies (ICS, founded 1953) is the UK’s national centre for the promotion and facilitation of research in Classics and related disciplines. Along with seven other discipline-specific research institutes and specialist hubs for Digital Humanities and Public Engagement it forms part of the School of Advanced Study, which is nationally funded to support and advance research and researchers in the humanities. The Institute supports and promotes research into the cultures of the ancient Mediterranean and neighbouring lands, ranging from prehistory to Late Antiquity, and encompassing languages and literature, art and archaeology, history and philosophy, and reception. It welcomes visiting fellows, runs an extensive events programme of seminars, guest lectures and conferences, provides advanced research training, small grants, and is home to one of the world’s leading classical research libraries, developed and operated in partnership with the Societies for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies and Roman Studies.

The Role

The Institute Manager is a crucial professional staff role within the ICS and the wider School of Advanced Study. The Institute Manager manages and co-ordinates the day to day running of the Institute and collaborates closely with the ICS Director, the Librarian of the Combined Classics Library, and other academic and professional staff across the School to realise the ICS’s mission of support for the national and international classical researcher community and the Institute’s role in the School’s strategic plan.

For a full role profile, please refer to the job description below.

Potential applicants are welcome to arrange a time for a confidential and informal conversation with the ICS Director by emailing katherine.harloe@sas.ac.uk.
