Job Description

The University of London

The University of London is one of the largest and most diverse higher education institutions in the world. With a mission to transform lives through knowledge, it delivers high quality academic programmes, brings benefits to society through its research in the humanities and social sciences, and leverages intellectual connections through public engagement.

The Role

The University of London’s Refugee Law Clinic are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic lawyer (or lawyers interested in a part-time job-share) with expertise in asylum and immigration law to join the team and further develop the work of the clinic. This will include training and supervising students and volunteer lawyers in providing free legal advice and representation to asylum seekers with fresh claims for asylum. The project has been developed in the context of gaps in legal aid and other legal provision, and the clinic assists clients in need of legal representation for ‘further submissions’ where they are appeal rights exhausted.

The successful candidate will work with the existing Supervising Lawyer to manage the overall caseload of the project, including delivering training, triaging cases and providing ongoing expert legal support to the UoL students and pro bono lawyers. They will be expected to support UoL students and volunteer lawyers currently working on cases to attend on clients, and supervise the preparation of ‘further submissions’ on protection grounds.

The successful candidate will also contribute to the strategic direction of this innovative project, particularly in light of the new Nationality and Borders Act. They will work to extend the clinic’s casework programme to respond to changes created by the Act and to further develop our networks with other law clinics and legal providers.

The successful candidate will have substantial experience at all levels of representing asylum seekers to make claims for asylum, including further submissions (fresh claims) and some experience of judicial review claims
